Where to stay in Rome with a big family: large rentals in Rome for larger families and multigenerational groups, carefully selected for location, facilities and welcome.

Finding accommodation in Rome as a bigger family is not always straightforward.

Hotels tend to cap occupancy to four people per room and apartments often are on the smaller side, especially in the city center, the most sough after area for visitors.

However, finding large rentals to stay in Rome is possible and you don’t necessity have to get too far out of the city to find them either!

I am from Rome and I regularly help families with kids to plan their trip to Rome.

The need for large hotel rooms or apartments that can take families with three or more kids or families that travel with kids and grandparents is a common one and, over time, I have selected addresses that I am confident will offer a great stay!

This is my list of the my best places to stay in Rome for larger families.

I have selected each place on the basis of the space they offer, location and overall quality of both accommodation and welcome from the hosts.

All locations are chosen for safety and easy of access to essential services, shops, restaurants as well as convenience for sightseeing.

Please note: this post contains affiliate links; should you make a purchase through them, we might make a small commission at no extra cost to you. I use booking.com for all accommodation booking for my family and find them a reliable and easy to use provider, which is why it is the provider of choice for all listing on this page. All apartments are handpicked by me.

Need to know! Occupancy rules in Rome are very strict. You need to declare all the people staying in the room / apartment when you check in and your host must, by law, pass this info to the authorities, with copies of IDs for each.

I have give the occupancy for each of these large rentals in Rome as a guidance of what each can take: you can check type of bed/ room layout etc directly with the host by following the links provided.

Piazza Navona Rome

The Palazzo has apartments of different sizes, each with slightly different characteristics (wooden floors vs tiles / dryer vs drying rack) and the bigger ones can take more that 7 guests and up to 11. It is absolutely brilliant for a large family, families traveling with kids and grandparents and even families sharing with friends.

The apartments are well equipped and even have nice touches for kids like high chairs and kids’ cutlery as well as essentials such as Heating / Air Conditioning, washing machine, all kitchen equipment including coffee machine etc.

The area is perfect for sightseeing as it it close to all main attraction and you have plenty of shops, supermarkets and restaurants for meals out and nights in. Of all the large rentals in Rome on this page, this is maybe the most impressive of all!

Gregoriana Suite (City Center/ Spanish Steps takes up to 6)

Gregoriana Suite is a fabulous family friendly apartment close to Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps), so in the very center of Rome.

Church of Trinita' dei Monti in Piazza di Spagna Rome

The apartment can take up to 6 people (2 been beds, 1 sofa bed, baby crib available), has lovely polished stone floors (easy to clean), beautiful ceiling beams, it is equipped with a good kitchen, washing machine, dryer and has wi-fi and air conditioning.

The apartment is up two flight of stairs and because of this and the stone floors I find it best suited to families with slightly older kids who can walk independently and do not need to carry strollers, car seats or too many items of luggage.

The location is perfect to explore and the area is very well served with restaurants, transport, taxis and shops.

2 Restart Apartments (Colosseo – takes up to 6)

Restart has several beautiful apartments in Rome and tow of them are close to the Colosseum and fabulous for families: Restart Torlonia and Restart Pamphili

Address:  Via San Giovanni in Laterano / Via Capo d’Africa, 00184 Rome | Sleeps: up to 6 | A/C: yes

Rome Colosseum and ancient arch with pine tree

Restart Pamphili takes up to 6 people, it is organized in 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and living space and a terrace.

Restart Torlonia can take up to 6 people (2 double bedrooms + sofa bed) and has the one thing that piqued my attention first: a wonderful rooftop terrace!

The terrace and high floor location comes with the downside of having to climb three flights of stairs, so I recommend this apartment especially to families with older kids who don’t need to lug up too much equipment.

The apartments are in the lovely neighborhood of Celio, with is just beside the Colosseum but is also local enough in feel to make you feel like you are in a real city, with real local life, food and vibe.

Domus Cecilia (Prati/Vaticano – takes up to 6)

Domus Cecilia is a lovely home in Prati, a central, beautiful, safe, well served quiet neighborhood in Rome I love.

Prati is on the other side of the river from the historical center yet it is walking distance from it and comes with an added bonus: proximity to the Vatican!

Address:  Via Cola di Rienzo 201, 00192 Rome | Sleeps: 5 +1 | A/C: yes

By staying here, you are away from the busiest streets of the center but you are still in a strategic location for sightseeing, with the plus of also being in a real, local neighborhoods, with all relevant perks: lower prices, plenty of shops, local feel etc.

Domus Cecilia is on the main shopping street in this area, wonderful Via Cola di Rienzo, and is perfect for a family with up to 3 kids sharing + a baby: the apartment is equipped with two doble beds, one sofa bed and a baby crib is available on request.

I terms of facilities, this is a self contained apartment so you have your own kitchen with dishwasher, 2 bathrooms, wi-fi, A/C, washing machine and has wooden floors throughout.

Hotel Smeraldo Family Suites (City Center, Campo de’ Fiori – takes up to 5)

The family Suite of Hotel Smeraldo is a great find in Rome.

The suite is made of 2 bedrooms (one double, one twin + the option to add baby crib) and is part of Hotel Smeraldo, which manages it.

This means that by staying here you have the advantages of independent accommodation yet the comfort of having hotel staff near you for anything you may need.

Address:  Via dei Chiavari 20, 00186 Rome | Sleeps: 4+1 | A/C: yes

campo de fiori

The suite is smaller than many others on this list (70 sq mt) but it has two rooms, a good kitchen, and the option of getting baby /kids equipment from the hotel (high chair, baby bath tub etc). So while not properly big, it competes with the large rentals in Rome on this list for number of guests it takes and hospitality.

The hotel /suite is on Via dei Chiavari which is right in the city center, close to Campo de’ Fiori and Piazza Navona.

The area has plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes, and places you walking distance from most attractions in Rome. If you like longer walk, you may be able to stay here and sightsee by walking exclusively during your stay.

Casa a San Giovanni (San Giovanni – takes up to 12/14)

Casa a San Giovanni is a large apartment for families with young kids on Via dell’Amba Aradam, on the edged of Rione Monti (Colosseum) and the residential area of San Giovanni.

Address:  Via dell’Amba Aradam 00186 Rome | Sleeps: 12/14 | A/C: yes

The apartment has rooms with queen beds, bunk beds, sofa bed and living room, fully equipped kitchen, washing machine and air conditioning. There are three bathrooms, bedrooms and a living room with a sofa bed so how many can stay comfortably depends also on age of kids and how much common space you may need for let’s say meals etc.

Compared with other properties on this list, it is a little more detached from main attractions and on a large road, but the space and price point make it a great solution for families with more than 3 kids.
