The most beautiful piazzas in Rome
Piazza Navona – the most famous of all piazzas of Rome
Address: Piazza Navona, 00186 Roma RM, Italy
Piazza Navona is the most famous square in Rome, the large piazza with fountains and obelisk that appears in so many movies set in Rome and in all Rome itineraries as one of the city’s must see sites.

Indeed, Piazza Navona is so beautiful it is breathtaking and it also has a story that is so unique, it is worth knowing.
Piazza Navona has ancient origins that date back to Roman times.
The piazza was originally built to serve as a Roman stadium by Emperor Domitian in the II century AD and the shape of the square we see today still bears witness of that first vocation.
The square is elliptical, it has very long sides and two semi circular sides that mark the ends of what would have been the path followed by the racing chariots.
If you don’t know about the origins of the square, you may miss that this is what makes it shape so peculiar but once you do, or you have visited the Circus Maximus, you will see it straight away.
The square as we see it today however, is very different from what it must have been like in Roman times. Piazza Navona went through a full redesign in the XVII century and it is now a marvel of Roman baroque architecture.
The piazza has works of art by two of the greatest architect active in Rome, Bernini and Borromini, and hosts some landmarks that are among the most beautiful in Rome.
Things to see in Piazza Navona are:
- The fountain of the 4 rivers, one of Bernini’s most successful works of art in Rome
- The two additional fountains, Fontana del Moro and Fontana del Nettuno, at the two ends of the piazza
- The church of Santa Agnese in Agone, created by the master hands of Borromini
Like many piazzas in Rome however, Piazza Navona is more than the sum of its parts. This Rome square is a marvel that keeps offering new sensations and views every time you go. For instance at Christmas, there is nice Christmas market here!

Piazza di Spagna – famous Rome piazza with the Spanish Steps
Address: Piazza di Spagna, 00187 Rome
Piazza di Spagna is the beautiful square in Rome with the famous Spanish Steps called, in Italian, ‘Scalinata di Piazza di Spagna’ (the Staircase of Piazza di Spagna)

The square takes its name from the Spanish embassy to the Holy Sea located here and it acquired the wonderful appearance we see today in the XVIII century, when the monumental staircase got built.
The steps were designed by architects Specchi and De Sanctis and they are wonderful.
The 136 steps articulate into several viewing terraces and the staircase has lovely, curved shapes that makes it adapt perfectly to the slope connecting the piazza to the church of Trinita’ dei Monti on top of the hill.

The steps were officially inaugurated by Pope Benedict XIII during the jubilee of 1725 and they are still now an important Rome landmarks, decorated every spring with stunning flowers that make it look like a natural part of the landscapes, as well as a marvelous work of art.
Visiting Piazza di Spagna is easy and a real treat. The best things to see in Piazza di Spagna are:
- The Spanish Steps: you will see the steps as soon as you enter the piazza and, if you walk here from Via Condotti, they will actually act as your guide, as you will see them right in front of you from quote a distance! I recommend you look at them from ground level but also walk up, to admire their elaborate shape
- The views from the top of the Spanish steps, among the most beautiful views in Rome
- La Barcaccia, the beautiful monumental fountain by Bernini at the basis of the steps
- Trinita’ dei Monti, the wonderful church at the top of the Spanish Steps that give the area its iconic skyline, with two twin bell towers dominating the degrading steps.

Piazza del Campidoglio – Michelangelo’s masterpiece
Piazza del Campidoglio address: Piazza del Campidoglio, 00186 Rome
Piazza del Campidoglio is the beautiful monumental piazza in Rome designed by Michelangelo, the one you see on the Italian 50 cent Euro coins, with the equestrian statue in the middle!

It is one of the most beautiful piazzas in Rome and it has a peculiar origin that is worth knowing.
Piazza del Campidoglio sits at the top of the Capitoline Hill, one of the 7 hills Rome was built on and one of the most significant.
In Roman times, this area was an important religious center and hosted the temples of the Capitoline Triad, the most important Roman Gods.
At the time, the area would have faced the Roman Forum, just below the hill, however, when in the XVI century Michelangelo got the commission to build the square, he moved its orientation around.
To symbolize the importance of the Vatican, he planned for the square to open up towards St Peter and he redesigned the whole ares to include a monumental staircase, beautiful palazzi and an equestrian statue in the center, that represent Marcus Aurelius but was believed to be of Constantine, the emperor that legalized Christianity in ancient Rome.
The square is wonderful and a true work of art.
Not to be missed here are:
- The Cordonata, the main monumental staircase into the square
- The statue of Marcus Aurelius, the best preserved equestrian statue form the time ever found
- The stunning view of the Roman forum from the back of the square, especially at night.

Piazza san Pietro is the large square with St Peter basilica and one of the most beautiful piazzas in Rome and the world.

St Pater’s square square is the result of the architectural genius of Bernini, who designed the piazza as we see it now in the XVII century and made it one of the most praised and visited squares in the world.
Bernini imagined the piazza as a monumental frame to the stunning St Peter basilica that, at the time, had just acquired a new façade and dome and it is entirely built to drive the attention of the visitor to the church center of Catholicism.
Bernini imagined two large curved colonnades to frame the center of the square and operate like ‘wings’ to welcome and protect the visitor in their journey towards the church.
He then proceeded to decorate the space with fountains, statues and steps, creating a space that manages to be monumental, grand and welcoming all at the same time
The square is a marvel of architectural eye and engineering and there are many elements here worth noticing:
- The Colonnade
- The fountains, located at the two sided of the elliptical shape of the square
- The statues, overlooking the square from above the colonnade
- St Peter’s basilica, which preexisted the square as we see it now and it is so beautiful meaningful and unique, it is simply one of the most beautiful churches in the world
