Where to stay near the Vatican: a curated list of the best hotels near the Vatican and accommodation options near Vatican City for all types of travelers.
Staying near the Vatican is the perfect solutions for travelers who want easy access to St Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel but also for those who look for accommodation close to the center yet in a more local and, often, budget friendly neighbourhood.
Vatican City itself doesn’t have tourist accommodation as such, but it is surrounded by beautiful neighborhoods with plenty of hotel, airbns, suites and tourist accommodation options to suit all budgets, plus all the restaurants and services you may need for.
Located on the opposite side of the river Tiber from the historic center, staying neat the Vatican means having easy access to Vatican City, aka St Peter’s Basilica, Sistine Chapel / Vatican Museums, St Peters’ square and places you about 15 to 20 minutes walk from Piazza Navona.
So, while it is less central than locations such as Pantheon / Navona / Campo de’ Fiori area, it is a great place to stay for those wishing to make Vatican City the focus of their trip and those who do not mind a slightly longer walk to the city center proper.
I am from Rome and this is my curated, handpicked selection of the best places to stay near the Vatican. I hope you find it useful!

Why stay near the Vatican
I recommend to stay near the Vatican if you:
Want easy access to Vatican City, for instance if you have a short time in Rome and the Vatican is the main focus of your visits, or want to visit multiple times
You have a ‘turning on the lights Keymaster tour‘ at the Vatican Museums, which requires a very early start – this is what I myself did very recently! Instead of crossing the city before dawn and worrying about transport, I got a hotel just beside the museum for one night. An excellent decision I’d take again and again. SPECTACULAR tour, by the way!
You don’t mind being a little further out of the center in order to get accommodation at a lower budget
You have kids and want to stay in a quieter, residential neighborhoods. In this case, you may enjoy my list of quiet neighborhoods in Rome to stay away from the maddening crowds
You have several activities in this area such a Vatican visit, cooking class with Lucilla, visit to Castel Sant’Angelo.
Why not to stay near the Vatican
The Vatican is at one end of the city center, which means attractions such as the Colosseum are the opposite further end of the tourist area.
The distance is about 1 hour on foot or a little less by public transport so this location is not ideal if your plans foresee most of your time spent in the Colosseum area or you prefer to avoid public transport.

Where to stay near the Vatican: need to know
The area around the Vatican consists of several neighborhoods, some immediately outside Vatican City, some requiring a slightly longer walk.
In terms of feel, some areas such as Prati are residential and upscale, others such as those close to Cipro and Ottaviano metro stops are busier and while still safe and pleasant, they get more tourism and crowds (think many shops, passing tours, buses etc).
A little further from the Vatican you have the area of Aurelia, which is safe and residential and more off the tourist track than those above, an element that usually comes with lower prices especially for rentals, which abound here.
