Cannoli in pastry shop in Rome

8 of the best pastry shops in Rome, chosen by a local, for a sweet treat and cakes you’ll love.

One of Rome’s most beloved food tradition is heading to a pasticceria on Sunday and buy a small tray of patisserie treats as dessert after Sunday lunch with relatives.

In Italian we patisserie treats pastarelle (lit: Little pastries) and everyone has their favorit typee: choux pastry, cream and fruit, whipped cream, no whipped cream…

The options are infinite and this is part of the fun as pastries come in several sized, some of which small enough to allows to get a rather generous selection!

If you are not familiar with Italian patisseries, do not worry!

With the addresses on this page, you are equipped with insider knowledge of the best places for pastries in Rome and, when relevant, what is the best one to try!

The shops selling pastries in Rome are called Pasticcerie and sell individual pastries, biscuits and cakes. In most cases, these are sold ‘to go’ but some are now equipped with coffee machines and small tables for you to enjoy your treat there and then.

Need to know! the words pastry shop and pasticceria are not an exact translation of one another. An Italian pasticceria is close to a French patisserie and sells cakes, sweets, biscuits but not necessarily breakfast pastries or croissant. For those, you need to go to a bar (caffe’) or specialised bakeries. You can find here >>> my list of best bakeries in Rome, for bread and pizza, with few addresses also offering breakfast pastries such as cornetto.
